Oxidants Inorganic Chemicals Cupric Oxide CAS 67-43-6 Catalysts Colorants For Porcelain
Introduction:
Copper oxide is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula CuO. It is a black copper oxide, slightly amphoteric and slightly hygroscopic. It is insoluble in water, easily soluble in acid, stable in heat, and decomposes into oxygen at high temperatures. It can be reduced to metallic copper by passing hydrogen or carbon monoxide at high temperatures. When copper oxide is heated in air, it releases oxygen at about 1050°C and is reduced to cuprous oxide. If it is in a hydrogen or carbon monoxide flow, it can be easily reduced to metallic copper even below 250°C. Although copper oxide is insoluble in water, it can be dissolved in an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide.
Uses:
It is used as a colorant in glass, enamel, and ceramic industries, an anti-wrinkle agent for paints, and a polishing agent for optical glass. It is used to make dyes, organic catalyst carriers, and copper compounds. It is also used in the artificial silk manufacturing industry and as a desulfurizer for oils and fats. It is used as a raw material for the manufacture of other copper salts and is also a raw material for making artificial gemstones.
