Introduction:
Cesium iodide, abbreviated as CsI, and inorganic halides including CsI(Tl) are widely used as scintillating media for high-energy particle and ionizing radiation detectors. Vacuum-deposited CsI(Tl) thin films were first used for x-ray imaging in photoelectric converters. In advanced digital x-ray imaging, CsI(Tl) scintillator films are widely used in x-ray imaging because of their high scintillation efficiency for x-ray radiation, high spatial resolution, and good matching to spectrally sensitive silicon-based readout arrays.
Uses:
Cesium iodide crystals are often used as scintillators in electromagnetic calorimeters in particle physics experiments. Cesium iodide can be used as a spectroscope in Fourier transform spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectrometers. Cesium iodide has a wider light transmission range than the more commonly used potassium bromide spectroscope, and the use band can extend to the far infrared. However, there is a problem. Optical Cesium Iodide crystals are very soft and have no cleavage, so it is difficult to make a flat polished surface. In addition, Cesium Iodide optical crystals must be stored in a dry container to prevent water from reacting with Cesium Iodide. Coating the surface of Cesium Iodide with a layer of germanium can minimize the effect of moisture in the air when exchanging spectroscopes. Used in the pharmaceutical industry and also as an analytical reagent.
